What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening uses products designed to remove stains from the surface of your teeth as well as intrinsically brighten your enamel.

Teeth whitening and tooth sensitivity

If your teeth are sensitive to hot or cold drinks and food, this may be caused by thin enamel. The products for teeth whitening penetrate your enamel and can cause additional sensitivity. While this tooth sensitivity can be uncomfortable, it is usually temporary and self-resolving.

Teeth whitening is a safe and comfortable option for sensitive teeth when you use the right products. Teeth whitening for sensitive teeth requires products that are specifically designed to minimize tooth sensitivity by applying them before and after whitening treatments. Additionally, we recommend that all patients receiving tooth whitening treatments use a sensitive toothpaste with fluoride before and after all whitening treatments to minimize sensitivity.

Types of Professional Teeth Whitening

In-office KOR whitening treatments occur in one or two in-office sessions where we will apply a specially formulated whitening gel to your teeth multiple times in a two-hour session, without having to use lights or lasers. This treatment improves your tooth color by multiple shades in just one visit. The KOR whitening system is specially formulated to minimize tooth sensitivity while providing excellent results that would take 2 to 4 weeks with take-home whitening kits. Some patients will also opt to get custom-made take-home whitening kits so they can maintain their whitening results over time.

Custom-made take-home whitening kits are an affordable whitening option that give you professional results without the added cost of in-office whitening sessions. To make your custom bleaching trays, we will use a 3D scanner to take digital impressions of your mouth. Once we design and 3D print your bleaching trays, you will receive your whitening kit. Most patients will use the whitening gel in their trays for 30-60 minutes per day for 2 to 4 weeks to achieve their desired bleach shade. After that, patients will whiten their teeth once every month or two to maintain their results.

Internal tooth bleaching is a tooth whitening option for patients who have a darkened tooth from previous trauma and root canal treatment. This option brightens your dark tooth from the inside out to improve its match and harmony with the rest of your smile. This treatment is usually completed in one or two in-office visits.

The process for teeth whitening

For in-office whitening, we cover your gum tissue with protective material before applying the bleaching gel for a specific amount of time. Each in-office session includes three applications of the bleaching gel, as well as anti-sensitivity treatment at the beginning and end of your session.

For custom take-home whitening kits, we use 3D printing to create the bleaching trays for your teeth whitening in-house. First, we conduct a scan to produce a 3D digital model of your teeth. Then, we use a design program to design your bleaching trays before we print them with a 3D printer. This process is fast and efficient so that our patients can start their teeth whitening treatment as soon as possible.Customized trays ensure that the whitening treatment is catered to your smile, and they allow you to perform whitening treatment as needed over time.

What to expect after Teeth Whitening

The results from teeth whitening can last for years with proper dental care. Make sure that you brush and floss your teeth daily and schedule regular dental cleanings. Avoid smoking, as tobacco is a common cause of tooth stains. After you drink a beverage associated with tooth staining, like coffee or red wine, rinse your mouth with water.
